GO EAST

CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR · OCTOBER 29–31

Passengers wait on the Emeryville platform beside the train. Passengers settling into the Sightseer Lounge car. Two passengers with coffee in the lounge car, autumn hills in the windows. Autumn oaks and pines on the slope below the tracks. Donner Lake below pine-covered ridges. The Truckee River through a canyon of autumn willows. Feet up in the lounge car, pines and the highway outside. Sagebrush desert and bare mountains, a shoe on the sill. Passengers in the lounge car, white flats in the windows. Passengers stretching on the Elko platform at night beside the train. First light on the horizon past a dark train window. A passenger at breakfast beside a window onto white flats at sunrise. A rock butte above a marshy river bend, a menu in the window corner. Yellow cottonwoods and a road past the window. Passengers stretching on a sunny platform beside the train. A green river below red, scrubby canyon walls. The Colorado River at Glenwood Springs below a red-rock mountain and houses in fall color. The Colorado River runs below red cliffs dotted with pines. The Colorado River rushes over boulders below the rock towers of Gore Canyon. Passengers walk the Granby platform beside the double-decker train. Low sun on grassy foothills and rocky peaks beside the tracks. Sun setting over buildings and a construction yard, seen through the train window. An empty table and seats in the train lounge, with passengers reflected in the dark window. An empty dining-car booth with a red carnation on the table, autumn trees blurring past the window. Bare trees blur past a golden harvested field under a gray sky. Red carnations and plates on the dining-car tables, the Mississippi out the windows. A bridge girder slants across the wide, gray Mississippi. Blue swivel seats face the curved windows of the sightseer lounge. Rail yards and an overpass on the way into Chicago, the skyline faint behind. Passengers with backpacks and rolling bags walk the platform beside the train at Union Station. Crowds cross Union Station under an arched skylight and tall columns.

53 hours, 11 states, and thousands of miles of American landscapes later, we reached the end of the tracks in Chicago. Trainposting concludes for now, essays coming soon 🚂
